ABOUT THE RESIDENCY:
Spirited Dance with Kimberly Miguel Mullen that Celebrate the Joy of Living!
Kimberly offers individual classes, workshops and extended dance residencies worldwide. She instructs various diverse and educational learning formats that are rooted in her professional dance training and extensive academic and cultural studies research in the Caribbean and Brazil.
Kimberly is skillful at making intellectual cultural dance forms accessible, relatable and beneficial to everybody by creating a context through which the execution of movement guides the exploration of the self and how we connect to others and the Universe at large. Kimberly provides a safe and non-competitive classroom environment in the spirit of learning for participants to not only explore the unique relationship between the various dance steps and drum rhythms but will also learn the cultural, political, historical, and social content of the dances.
ABOUT KIMBERLY:
Classically trained folkloric dance artist and cultural ethnologist Kimberly Miguel Mullen contributes to a legacy of performers from the Caribbean and Brazil. Her dance practice is rooted in ritual dance expressions from AfroCaribbean/AfroBrazilian religious systems of deities called the Orichas/Orixas. Through ongoing innovative performances, in-depth workshops, dance residencies and trainings, Mullen expands the reach of African diasporic forms. Mullen is among a select few artists and scholars who combine knowledge and technical excellence in ritual dance forms, culture, and histories. As the bearer of dance traditions through apprenticeship and ethnographic research, Mullen combines the influences of her training in traditional Oricha / Orixa dance styles with Silvestre technique to which she has devoted herself for over thirty years. Since receiving her Master of Arts degree from UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures, in 2005, Mullen is a seasoned University dance professor.
Mullen makes her knowledge of the healing and regenerating dimensions of dance accessible to a global audience through her teachings and her award winning international dance and fitness DVDs and online education platform, The DancingSKIRT Society - the first and largest digital archive of Oricha/Orixa dance practices.
She is also a leader in the field of dance ethnology for her development of culturally conscious art curricula and travel abroad immersion programs to the Caribbean. The Los Angeles Times has described her dancing as “spectacularly supple” since she infuses her dances with a remarkable ability to embody, interpret, and transmit the character of the archetypes of Yoruba called Orichas or Orixas. Her choreographies, based on her practice of innovative improvisation, navigate her position as a performer of oricha dance practices.
