About this Event
“Invitation to Love” is a recital of 20th and 21st-century American song performed by soprano Chelsea Helm and pianist Lester Green.
With a focus on poetry, this thematic program explores the ways our relationships grow and ripen with time, and features introspective and intimate songs our desire to create peaceful lives with others and find peace within ourselves.
The recital includes classical, contemporary, and jazz works for voice and piano. Alongside pieces by Leonard Bernstein, Undine Smith Moore, Adolphus Hailstork, Jerome Kern, and Carla Bley, you’ll hear brand new songs by Alex Berko and Julia Evans, and a world premiere by Griffin Candey.

Known for her versatile instrument and performances marked by emotional intimacy, soprano Chelsea Helm is sought-after as a concert soloist, chamber collaborator, and choral ensemble artist. A champion for art song, she presents recitals each season that return to favorites from the standard repertoire while prominently featuring established and emerging American composers. In addition to teaching a private voice studio, she frequently presents lectures and masterclasses on vocal technique and flexibility in varied styles of singing.
Dr. Lester Green is a collaborative pianist, vocal coach, and educator whose work centers on integrated performance. As a performer and teacher, he helps artists restore agency in their technique and remove barriers to expressive freedom. Dr. Green serves on the faculty of Morgan State University and the University of Maryland, and his work spans collaborative piano, vocal coaching, musical theatre, performance pedagogy, and artist development.
