Catch Me If You Can (M, 2002) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House PerthFrank Abagnale Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a brilliant, audacious young con artist who, before the age of nineteen, successfully impersonates an airline pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer while forging millions of dollars in fraudulent checks across the globe. As Frank's elaborate deceptions grow increasingly ambitious, dedicated FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) becomes obsessed with tracking him down, initiating a years-long game of cat-and-mouse that spans continents. As their pursuit unfolds, an unlikely mutual respect develops between hunter and hunted, revealing the loneliness and longing for connection driving Frank's elaborate impersonations, rooted in his desperate attempt to hold together the fractured pieces of his family life.
Director Steven Spielberg crafts a stylish, effervescent crime caper that balances lighthearted, glamorous con-artist thrills with genuine emotional undercurrents about family, identity, and belonging. Leonardo DiCaprio brings charismatic energy and hidden vulnerability to Frank's elaborate deceptions, while Tom Hanks provides a steady, increasingly warm counterpoint as the dogged agent pursuing him. Spielberg's confident direction, paired with John Williams's jazzy, playful score and the film's stylish, era-appropriate production design, captures the glamour of 1960s jet-set culture with genuine visual panache. Christopher Walken's Academy Award-nominated performance as Frank's troubled father adds poignant depth to the film's exploration of paternal disappointment and the lengths a son might go to reclaim his father's pride, resulting in a crowd-pleasing caper with genuine emotional resonance beneath its stylish surface.
