This BUTOH and BODYWEATHER workshop is a five hour intensive exploration designed to introduce and develop the the basic tenets, techniques and skills of MIN TANAKAS Bodyweather, and the Japanese dance form, Butoh.
The teaching is designed to enhance mobility, creativity, and communication. It integrates Bodyweather's movement skills, Butoh’s kinaesthetic imagery, and expressive narratives. The combination of the two systems creates an enhanced and powerful personal presence one can use in ones daily life and, if an actor, dancer or performer - for stage.
‘The coaching and communication work of Bodyweather really counterpoints and opens for an understanding and appreciation of the Butoh’
John Fielding, Participant - Berlin 2016.
Experience the ontology and philosophic edge of Min Tanakas Bodyweather, juxtaposed with the sensuality and animalistic freedom of Butoh.
Led by a teacher and coach in both techniques the workshop combines the MB1 physical warm-up, slow movement BISOKU, breathing techniques including the BUTOH DEATH BREATH, the improvisation forums of SELFISH MIRROR and JUNGLE and the BUTOH FU or images handed down to Min Tanaka from Tatsumi Hijikata.
PRACTICAL REQUIREMENTS
This workshop is open to all levels and ages: from a dance professional to a person with two left feet, damaged knees, or an injured back. This workshop is consent based trauma-informed, and a gender inclusive space.
Loose clothing for moving. Not a sweaty workshop but please regulate heat with suitable clothing. Note book and pen is advised.
BUTOH SUMMARY
Created in the late 1950s by Tatsumi Hijikata and later developed with Kazuo Ohno, is a Japanese avant-garde dance form known for its expressive, raw movements. It explores themes such as transformation, death, and the subconscious, using slow, controlled gestures and intense physicality to evoke deep emotions and challenge traditional dance norms. Exponents include the group Sainkai Juku, Dairakudakan and individual performers such as Yoshita Ohno, Ashikawa and Yumiko Yoshioka and Min Tanaka.
BODYWEATHER SUMMARY
Movement, Mind and Self development practice originating in Japan in the 1980’s by Actor Dancer Min Tanaka. Blending philosophy, communication technology, martial arts, and dance training, it explores the mind and body's adaptability, situational awareness, and connection to the environment.
THE TEACHER
Stuart Lynch is a Theatre Director, Writer, Performer and an accredited coach in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. From 2013 to 2023 Lynch was the headmaster of the Copenhagen Film and Theatre School where he was the head arts management coach, taught Voice Production, Physical Theatre and Improvisation.
Lynch was a professional Butoh Dancer and Educator throughout the 90s. He was educated at the source in Japan and was a student and dancer with Japanese Butoh Dancer and actor, Min Tanaka (Tanaka both developed Bodyweather and studied with Butoh founder, Tatsumi Hijikata). Lynch has led Dance Theatre Companies in Australia and Denmark and his last major show, DREYER, DEN DANSKE TYRAN, opened the 2012 Copenhagen International Film Festival.
He has written several plays and books and his last written work, THIRTY-SIX MONOLOGUES was published in February 2024. His latest play, CARAVAGGIOS EGG will premiere in Spring 2025.
Currently he is Artist in Residence at the Copenhagen House of Literature, Literaturhaus and will premiere his new dance theatre concert work, OBLIVION at Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium in November 2024.
‘The physiological and psychological connection of the body to the environment is intimately connected with one's state of mind. This connection is radically affected when stressed or pressured or when damaged by past trauma or fears for the future. Min Tanakas method mediates these states with the aim of generating a greater personal presence, physicality and stronger mental health’
- Stuart Lynch quote from iScene Interview in 2022
‘Butoh allows our animal to emerge and play in the China Shop’
- Stuart Lynch quote from the Calctutta Telegraph 1998
