Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a broke American, and Céline (Julie Delpy), a French student heading home to Paris, end up next to each other on a train out of Budapest. They get talking, and when it pulls into Vienna, where he has a flight home the next morning, he talks her into getting off with him. That's the whole plot: two strangers walking around a city all night, talking about death, sex, their parents and what they want, knowing it ends at sunrise.
Richard Linklater won Best Director at Berlin for it, and turned a film that's almost nothing but conversation into one of the most loved romances ever made. It started with a real night: in 1989 Linklater met a woman in Philadelphia and walked the city with her until morning. Hawke and Delpy went on to co-write two sequels, nine years apart, and the trilogy became one of cinema's great long-distance love stories. Start here.
