Asia Cine-Club: Linda Linda Linda リンダ リンダ リンダ (2005, Japan)🗓 Tuesday, November 3 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Three days before their school festival, a high-school girl band falls apart: the guitarist has hurt her hand and the singer has quit after a fight. The three who are left decide to play anyway, switch to covers of the Blue Hearts, the great Japanese punk band of the late '80s, and recruit the first person who walks past: Son (Bae Doona), a Korean exchange student who barely speaks Japanese. They have three days to learn the songs.
Nobuhiro Yamashita isn't interested in the big dramatic beats of a band movie. He lets the film hang out in practice rooms, convenience stores and empty classrooms at 2am, and that's why people love it. Bae Doona is extraordinary as Son, who finds her nerve one karaoke booth at a time. Aki Maeda from Battle Royale plays the drummer, and James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins wrote the score. A recent 4K restoration has given it a whole new audience.
"Doona Bae, in particular, with her wide surprised eyes and blunt manner, is comedy gold here."
– Laura Clifford, Reeling Reviews
"Full of joy and triumph."
– Zach Youngs, InSession Film
