About this Event

Have you always wanted to sing and would like to build your courage to sing with confidence? Do you already have experience and would like to develop your vocal skills? On Sunday 15th February, from 3.30pm - 4.30pm in the Salisbury Centre, Edinburgh, award-winning opera singer and voice teacher, Louise Macdonald will guide you through a process in a safe, nurturing environment where you'll have fun in a community of like-minded women. These workshops are suitable for all levels of vocal experience and for women of any age. We apply Kind Internal Self Talk throughout, to build confidence in what we are capable of.

Women's voices are constantly changing throughout our lives, more noticeably after childbirth and through peri/menopause and beyond. There are skills we can learn to sustain our voices through these changes. Each workshop from February till June will take a different theme and area of vocal wellbeing to focus on. This workshop is somewhere between a singing lesson and a choir, giving you skills to take back to your own choir, band, church, singing group or singing at home.

Here is what you'll learn at each workshop:

  1. Gentle movement combined with the breath, to release stress and promote a healthy nervous system. (2min)
  2. A singing game or round to have fun and create community. (8 min)
  3. Breathing and vocal technique (a vocal exercise) on a given topic each month. See topics below. (30 min)
  4. Singing a new song each month, in harmony, applying what we have learned . (20 min)

You are welcome to drop in to a single session, to attend all sessions or to choose which sessions you wish to attend. Although the skills are cumulative, each theme will be repeated at a later date in the year, so if you miss a particular topic or would like to repeat a session, you are welcome to do this. Breathing will always be revised, as this is the foundation of all healthy singing.

Sunday February 15th, 3.30-4.30pm - Posture/Breathing

Sunday March 8th, 3.30-4.30pm - Tongue release/Breathing

Sunday April 19th, 3.30-4.30pm - Optimum position of the jaw/Breathing

Sunday May 10th, 3.30-4.30pm- Lifting the soft palate/Breathing

Sunday 14th June, 3.30pm-4.30pm - Strong cononants connecting with vowels for musical expression/Breathing

I look forward to meeting you or seeing you again! Warmest wishes, Louise x
