About this Event

BLE Oakland: Free Ourselves, Feed Ourselves

October 2026 marks 60 years since the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, a turning point that reshaped movements for Black liberation.

To honor that legacy, Black Life Everywhere (BLE) has dedicated its third issue to Oakland. Over eight weeks, we’ve paired written pieces with performances and other creative works.

On November 21st, it all comes together in person. BLE Oakland is a community symposium that celebrates the work from this issue, features exhibitions from local artists, and opens up conversation about how the Panthers changed politics in Oakland, where we stand now, and where the city is headed.

The day opens with “Nourish the Root,” a panel conversation with Jenn Jackson, Amber Butts, Niema Jordan, KB Brookins, and Darrick Smith, and closes with a keynote address from Ericka Huggins, former Black Panther Party leader, educator, and lifelong advocate for community care.

Come connect, share ideas, and get inspired around themes of Black liberation and self-sustenance. Expect art, food, music, and good company in a relaxed, welcoming space.

Join us in Oakland to empower our community: free ourselves, feed ourselves, and thrive together!

Bring a donation: In the spirit of the Panthers’ community survival programs, we’re collecting non-perishable food items at the event. Bring what you can to help us feed our community.
