Celebrate Black History Month 2026 with UCL Computer Science as UCL marks 200 years, honouring Black histories, cultures and voices.
About this Event

The UCL Computer Science Race Equality Working Group invites you to join us this Black History Month to celebrate Black histories, cultures and communities at UCL, as we mark UCL’s bicentenary.

Enjoy an afternoon of live spoken word, a Living History video premiere, a keynote from Bolu Babalola, networking and Afro-Caribbean food.

Win up to £150 in our Student Spoken Word Competition, or submit a video for the chance to win one of multiple £50 Argos vouchers in our raffle.

Come together with the UCL community to celebrate, reflect and connect.


Keynote speaker: Bolu Babalola

We are delighted to welcome as our keynote speaker.

Bolu Babalola is an award-winning author and storyteller whose work celebrates Black love, culture, identity and community. She is the author of Honey & Spice and Love in Colour, with her distinctive storytelling resonating with audiences around the world.

What to expect?

The afternoon will feature:

🎥 Living History Video Premiere
A special video compilation featuring reflections from Black students and staff at UCL, exploring identity, experience and Black history at the university.

🎤 Student Spoken Word Competition
Shortlisted student poets and spoken-word artists will perform pieces exploring Black identity, culture, community, belonging and hopes for the next 100 years.

Keynote and Q&A with Bolu Babalola
Hear from our special guest keynote speaker, followed by an opportunity for audience questions.

🏆 Spoken Word Prize Ceremony
We will announce the winners of the student spoken-word competition and celebrate their performances with prizes selected by our judging panel and the audience.

🍽️ Networking, food and community
Stay after the formal programme to meet other attendees, continue the conversation and enjoy Afro-Caribbean food.

Prizes

Our top three spoken-word performances will receive:

🥇 1st Prize — £150
🥈 2nd Prize — £100
🥉 3rd Prize — £50

Prizes will be awarded by our judging panel following the live performances at the event.


Video Submission Raffle

Everyone who submits a video contribution will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win a £50 Argos voucher.

Multiple vouchers are up for grabs! So don’t miss your chance to share your story and be in with a chance of winning.
