BGH x London Wildlife Trust: Forest Hill to Balham

Meeting time: 10am

Meeting point: Forest Hill Station Car Park, Devonshire Road, Forest Hill, London, SE23 3HB

End point: Balham Station, Balham Station Road, London, SW12 9SG

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance: 14 km

Duration: Approx 5 hours

Join us as we walk part of the Green London Way, one of the first urban long-distance walking routes in the country, dating back to 1991. It is a circular route of about 100 miles through London.

Together, we'll go on a moderate urban nature hike through some of South London’s greenest areas, combining woodland trails, parkland and residential streets.

The route includes a few small steady inclines, particularly around Sydenham Hill Wood, but most of the walk is on paved paths and maintained trails.

About our partnership: This walk is being offered as part of the 'Reuniting Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood' project, an initiative that brings together two ancient woodlands known locally as Dulwich Wood and Sydenham Wood, while delivering a host of physical improvements and community activities to this much-loved local resource and green space. The project is made possible by the support of a number of funders and community partners: The National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Dulwich Estate, Southwark Council, The Kusuma Trust, The John Horseman Trust, Black Girls Hike and Wanderers of Colour. This funding and these partnerships help to secure the future of the woods by bringing together the management of Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood under London Wildlife Trust, and welcoming people from all backgrounds into the Woods.

Terrain: A mix of woodland trails and pavement paths, with some inclines and steps. Paths can be slippery and muddy in wet weather, so hiking boots with good ankle support are recommended.

What to bring: Water, light lunch/snacks, weather appropriate clothing, layers, and supportive footwear suitable for walking for several hours.

Facilities: Toilets and cafés are available near sections of the route and at various park stops. Convenience shops are available close to both the start and end points and on the journey.

Transport: The walk starts and ends at train stations.

Parking: This walk is not a circular route so please note the above start and end points. Paid parking is available at Forest Hill Station Car Park.
