Betty Blue: Director's Cut (R 18+, 1986) 40th Anniversary Presented in 35mm Film and English Subtitles by The Revival House PerthZorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade), a handyman and aspiring novelist working at a beachside resort, falls into a passionate, all-consuming relationship with the volatile, magnetic Betty (Béatrice Dalle). As their intense romance deepens, Betty's fierce devotion to Zorg and unwavering belief in his creative talent gradually reveals a fragile, increasingly unstable psyche, her mood swings escalating from playful spontaneity into genuinely alarming volatility. As the couple drifts across France pursuing Zorg's writing ambitions and Betty's own restless search for meaning, their relationship becomes a harrowing portrait of love pushed to its most destructive extremes, forcing Zorg to confront the devastating consequences of loving someone whose passionate intensity may ultimately consume them both. This screening presents the original French audio with English subtitles.
Director Jean-Jacques Beineix crafts a visually sumptuous, emotionally raw romantic drama that became a defining work of the French "cinéma du look" movement, prioritising bold visual style and heightened emotional intensity over conventional restraint. Béatrice Dalle delivers a fearless, career-defining performance, embodying Betty's magnetic charisma and mounting psychological fragility with ferocious commitment. Beineix's vivid, sun-drenched cinematography captures both the giddy euphoria of the couple's early romance and the increasingly claustrophobic dread of its unraveling, while the film's unflinching, explicit intimacy generated significant controversy upon release. Blending genuine passion with devastating tragedy, Betty Blue remains a landmark of 1980s French cinema, its raw emotional intensity and visual audacity continuing to captivate and unsettle audiences.
