According to traditional stories, an ordinary cat may transform into a Bakeneko as it grows older, gaining mystical abilities that can include speaking human language, walking on two legs, bringing good fortune, or even cursing those who do harm. Bakeneko are often associated with mystery, transformation, independence, mischief, and wisdom.
