The Alliance for Police Accountability (APA) is preparing to become an independent charity: a Foundation Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), ending the current arrangement in which Action for Race Equality (ARE) holds secretariat and accountable-body responsibilities on the APA's behalf.This away day is where the Steering Group takes the founding decisions for that new organisation. Over the course of the day we will confirm the APA's draft charitable objects, ratify the Foundation CIO as our route to independence, work through the draft Constitution clause by clause, and set out what trustee responsibility means in practice, distinct from Steering Group membership.
The day closes with each Steering Group member confirming their own place in the new organisation, as a trustee or as a founder.
These are the decisions that will shape the APA's governance, its independence from ARE, and its standing to campaign for community police accountability as a registered charity. Attendance matters.
