Antarctica, or The Late Heroic by Jarid McCarthyDirected by Rose Kim
Two flat-earth conspiracists prepare to take a fatal voyage, while an artist-in-residence at a remote facility articulates a final word.
Indra and Callum depart on an amateur sailing expedition to prove that Antarctica is in fact not a continent, but an oppressive wall of ice at the edge of the world. Propelled by each other's convictions, they slowly uncover the different roots of their beliefs, which threaten to unravel their once-shared reality.
Lynne, the final participant of the Antarctic Artists and Writers Program, struggles to complete her commission while assisting underfunded environmental researchers on Ross Island. When her own scholarship is unexpectedly cut, she begins to sense another force beyond her creative block: the Antarctic itself orchestrating her certain doom.
Antarctica is an apocalyptic comedy set at the intersection of science and art and paranoia, where leaders stoke ignorance in order to make a profit out of decline.
See Antarctica in the 2026 EMBARK festival at No Square Theatre in Laguna Beach - a weekend of bold, exciting new work from the dramatists in OCPA's emerging playwrights cohort.
EMBARK, created by Baylee Shlichtman and facilitated by AJ Layague, is a pay-what-you-can new play festival produced each October by the Orange County Playwrights Alliance, presented at No Square Theatre in the heart of Laguna Beach.
