An UnCommon Conference - Healing from the Inside

What does it take to create the conditions for healing and transformation inside prisons, and what becomes possible when we do?
On Thursday, October 22, UnCommon Law’s Healing From the Inside Conference will bring together leaders, practitioners, advocates, and people with lived experience for a powerful day of learning, honest dialogue, and collective problem-solving at Merritt College in Oakland.
We won’t only spotlight what is working. Together, we’ll confront the barriers that continue to stand in the way of meaningful change and explore how healing-centered approaches can strengthen accountability, transform prison environments, support safe pathways home, and build safer communities.
Throughout the day, leading organizations and advocates will share approaches to advancing healing and transformation from inside prisons and across communities.
Sessions led by:
✦ California Alliance for Parole Reform, Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, and Initiate Justice on inside-outside advocacy and California’s parole landscape today
✦ ARMS DOWN, Vera Institute of Justice’s North Dakota initiative, and Harm to Healing Collaborative in a fast-paced lightning round spotlighting bold approaches to transformation
✦ Jess Nichol, Miguel Quezada of the MEND Collaborative, and UnCommon Law founder and Executive Director Keith Wattley in a fireside chat exploring restorative justice, accountability, healing, and the full complexity of harm
✦ Poetic Justice California, Marin Shakespeare Company, and Uprise Theater on healing through the arts
✦ Land Together, Amend, and Sustainability in Prisons Project on the connection between nature and healing
✦ Guiding Rage Into Power (GRIP) and Creating Restorative Opportunities and Programs (CROP) on building therapeutic communities
✦ Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition, California Coalition for Women Prisoners, and Unapologetically HERS on breaking barriers for women and transgender people
This conference is about more than sharing ideas, it is about building what comes next. Attendees will have opportunities to bring their own experiences into the conversation, confront challenges alongside others in the field, and help shape solutions that can deepen collaboration and turn healing-centered values into meaningful action.
The challenges are significant. So is the collective power in this room to address them.
We hope you’ll be part of it.
