Celebrating international opera day, Echoes of the Unknown will be improvising on musical motifs from operas written by composers such as Verdi, Dvořák, Puccini, Saint-Säens and many more.
The music will be based on melodies from operas that will take an unexpected journey, using instruments that aren’t often heard in a classical music setting.
To honour classical music and classical techniques, we will start our musical journey with a short recital of folk songs.
We will be joined by founder, Portuguese soprano Catarina Carvalho and a surprised guest… to be announced.
Emilija Karaliute is a professional classical and folk musician who began studying the kankles in Lithuania from an early age, developing a deep connection to the instrument and its cultural roots. She has been playing the kankles for 15 years and has been awarded the title of the National Laureate of Lithuania twice. The kankles is the Lithuanian National instrument, which remains relatively unknown to many. Emilija is passionate about sharing the kankles with new audiences, promoting the diversity of Lithuanian culture. Now a regular performer in the UK, with her recent solo shows in Paris, Emilija continues to engage audiences with her ability to integrate the kankles into diverse genres, including classical, contemporary, and folk music.
Catarina Carvalho is a classically trained singer graduate from Trinity Laban Conservatoire and sound artist with a strong interest in the relationship between sound/music and health and wellbeing.
Catarina is the founder of Echoes of the Unknown, leading other wellbeing concerts and soundbaths alongside. Adding to her work in yoga studios and schools, Catarina also runs community choirs and singing groups for people living with dementia. She strongly believes that music and sound are universal languages, and they have the power to bring us back to ourselves, but also to connect with each other, empowering society overall.
Born and raised in Hackney, Alex Dmochowski has been around music from all over the world since a young age. After first picking the clarinet at 6 years old and the saxophone at 12, Alex went on to graduate from Trinity Laban Conservatoire. He currently leads his own band, 'In the name of Ra', and alongside plays music from varied and rich cultures in bands with musicians from Ghana, India, and South America. Each of these projects continue to inspire and humble him on a daily basis, heavily influencing his own work.
