What would an Arts & Culture Committee look like in Kalamazoo? And who should have a seat at the table?Join Kalamazoo City Commissioner Jae Slaby and the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo for Art to Heart, an evening dedicated to exploring the creation of a City-appointed Arts & Culture Committee.
Kalamazoo has appointed boards and commissions that give residents a formal role in advising City government on issues like planning, historic preservation, and the environment. What if we established a similar body for arts and culture?
An Arts & Culture Committee could provide an ongoing opportunity for residents, artists, and cultural organizations to help shape the City's approach to arts and culture, including its policies, priorities, programs, and investments.
Together, we'll explore:
- What an appointed City committee is and how it works.
- What responsibilities an Arts & Culture Committee could have.
- Who should serve and how different communities and artistic disciplines could be represented.
- How a committee could complement existing organizations and City initiatives.

5:30–7:30 PM
Factory Coffee on Frank Street, Kalamazoo
The evening will begin with an informal gathering and refreshments, followed by a discussion about what this committee could look like and how residents could help shape its development.
No committee has been established, and no decisions have been made. This is an opportunity to explore the possibilities together before any formal proposal moves forward.
Whether you're an artist, cultural organizer, neighborhood resident, or simply someone who cares about how Kalamazoo invests in arts and culture, you're invited to help shape what comes next.
