About the Film
In the Occupied West Bank during the 1980s First Intifada, a Palestinian teenager named Noor gets caught up in a violent street protest. In the traumatic aftermath of this event, his mother Hanan (played by writer-director Cherien Dabis) unspools their sweeping family history.
The narrative stretches back to the 1948 Nakba, where the family patriarch, Sharif, a citrus farmer in Jaffa, refuses to leave his ancestral land—a fateful decision that results in his capture and his family’s forced exile. Moving forward, the film chronicles the shifting realities of living under military occupation in 1978, Noor's confrontation in 1988, and finally concludes in the 2020s present. Decades later, Sharif's descendants find themselves scattered from Jaffa and the West Bank all the way to Toronto, bound together by collective memory, generational trauma, and a persistent longing for home.
