Join fashion historians Dr Serena Dyer and Gemma Esvelt for a lively illustrated talk investigating the evolution of women’s clothes and accessories during the Georgian period. Exploring different social classes through original garments, paintings and diaries, this talk builds a picture of what a typical woman might have owned and worn. Using meticulously recreated garments, Serena and Gemma will also demonstrate the layers and garments that built the Georgian silhouette.
About the speakers Dr Serena Dyer FRHistS is a historian, broadcaster, and curator, specialising in the history of fashion, making and shopping. She is an Associate Professor of Fashion History and De Montfort University and the presenter of Fashion Through History for English Heritage. She has published a number of books on Georgian fashions. Her next book, Georgian Fashion: Britishness and Dress in the Eighteenth Century is coming soon from Yale University Press.
Gemma Esvelt is a historian and curator specialising in historical fashions and social history. She is a curator at Calderdale Museums which includes Bankfield Museum and looks after a large collection of historical textiles. She has recently curated two major exhibitions for the Fashion Gallery including; Costume Drama in 2025 and Fashion Extremes! for 2026.
Both Serena and Gemma have an interest in reconstructing and wearing historical garments which gives fascinating insight into the material lives of women from the past.
