About this Event
Recent years have seen a welcome increase in the number of stories and characters from the African diaspora on European stages. Plays like Inua Ellams’s Barber Shop Chronicles, set in six different countries, represent the diaspora as both an experience of fragmentation and as a starting point for international, multilingual community-building.
In that spirit, this event brings together four playwrights whose works explore Afro-diasporic themes: two based in the UK who write in English – Inua Ellams and Zodwa Nyoni – and two based in France who write in French – Penda Diouf and Eva Doumbia. They will discuss the place of language in their work, the representation of Africa and diasporic identities, and efforts to decolonise the arts in their respective countries.
The bilingual conversation will be chaired by Dr Macs Smith of SELCS and Dr Hélène Neveu-Kringelbach of the Department of Anthropology. Translation will be provided.
This event is supported by the UCL Grand Challenge of Cultural Understanding, the Lord Randolph Quirk Fund, and the AHRC.
Attendance is free and all are welcome!
