Celebrating Herb's Legacy
Herb was an incredible storyteller and historian. From wowing us with his firsthand account of the fall of the Berlin Wall to his career in journalism, he always brought history to life. He was a community anchor who beautifully shared his sense of the sacred from his Jewish faith, expertly holding two or more truths at the same time. He also kept us all organized and aware of the Jewish High Holidays (and Seahawks dates!) when planning our yearly calendars.
A dedicated CDR mediator since 2015, Herb took to the work like a duck to water. In his later years, he found his jam in small claims mediation, where he got quickly to the point and transformed litigious disputes into moments of genuine empathy.
Through his Facebook updates, Herb taught us all to appreciate the resident trees of Tacoma, which he lovingly visited and photographed with his wife, Sonja. CDR board member Brendan Nelson has collaborated with the Tacoma Tree Foundation to bring this tree to life as part of the effort to reforest Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood—and to honor and remember Herb for decades to come.
