7-UP.2: THE UNMADE, a two-person exhibition presented by the Philadelphia Art
Handling team, bringing together the work of Sean Irwin and Tom McFarland for an evening centered around art, experimentation, and the execution of ideas.
Philadelphia Art Handling provides thoughtful solutions for the fine art world on both a local andinternational level. With 7-UP.2 THE UNMADE, we are taking that a step further by inviting audiences to look beyond the finished artwork, into the process that creates it, and the enchanting artifacts it leaves behind.
The exhibition is a celebration of art and artifacts born from the ritual of making. 7-UP.2 THE UNMADE will be presented in a dimly lit space surrounding a shrouded and glowing shrine built to house the curation. The works presented are not all necessarily the traditional idea of “fine art,” but rather objects, surfaces, and remnants that emerged through the process of creating. The beauty and significance of these works was discovered through the act of making and taking notice of the details that were left behind. At Philadelphia Art Handling, we are uniquely interested in taking a step back and looking at the creation, presentation, and installation of art from a different perspective. We invite you to come and peek at the world through our eyes.
Sean Irwin and Tom McFarland approach making from distinctly personal perspectives putting up 7 unique pieces each. Irwin, a Philadelphia-based artist and master framer, works across sculpture and drawing, developing intricate patterns and surfaces through materials including cast dryer lint, PVA, pencil, gouache, and micro-glitter. His practice explores the relationship between process, surface, and transformation. McFarland, a Brooklyn-based artist and RISD-trained painter originally from San Antonio, works primarily in mixed media, combining materials such as string, resin, acrylic, mesh, wood, and hardware to deconstruct and rebuild the traditional picture plane. Together, their work offers two different perspectives on what happens when the process of making becomes the artwork itself. 7-UP.2 THE UNMADE asks us to consider the marks, materials, accidents, remnants, and discoveries that exist somewhere between an idea and its final form.
