“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁.”In a society where women still have to challenge assumptions about their ability to think, reason and lead, the debating arena can be more than a space for arguments. It can be a space for change.
Equality, however, cannot remain confined to words or intentions. It must be reflected in the opportunities we create.
This belief has been at the heart of the IER Debating Club’s 50-50 initiative, which has brought together debaters through five successful seasons of the National British Parliamentary Debate Tournament. And now, the journey continues.
Introducing 50-50: Season 6.0, an Open British Parliamentary Debate Tournament organised by the IER Debating Club (IERDC), with the theme “Pacing Towards Equality.” As we step into another season, we aspire to move beyond acknowledging equality as an idea and actively practise it through equal representation and participation.
From the speakers on the floor to the people working behind the scenes, this tournament embraces the principle of gender balance across its debate teams, adjudication panel, tab team, equity team and motion committee. Because a truly inclusive debating culture is built not only on who gets to speak, but also on who gets to decide, organise, evaluate and lead.
So, debaters, are you ready to challenge ideas, sharpen your arguments, and be part of a tournament where equality is more than just a theme?
Here’s everything you need to know before stepping into the arena.
