Growth Can Look Different: Imagining Community Support for SEN Youth
About this Event

Growth Can Look Different: Imagining Community Support for SEN Youth

In the 2025/26 school year, more than 70,000 students in public schools have special educational needs (SEN). Apart from academic follow-up and accommodations, SEN students also need multi-faceted support that fits their age, developmental stage, and personality—and even more importantly, understanding and acceptance by the general public. In an age of advanced technology and media, young people today actually have fewer opportunities to connect with others, build healthy relationships, and develop their own talents. Beyond chasing learning progress day and night and gearing up for the tempest of public exams, are there alternative visions for growing up? As our community faces various challenges, are there new pathways that suit SEN or other disadvantaged youth?

ISV Lab is dedicated to youth empowerment and social innovation. We are honoured to invite Mr. Matthew Lai, Dragon Boat Coach of social enterprise Hywind Watersport (海泓龍舟), and Ms. Gigi Morales, co-founder of WePaint (菁然社企), to share how sports and the arts can open up space for growth and employment for SEN youth. This event will also feature students from The University of Hong Kong, who will introduce the design concept of Actually Answered (SEN 聲)—a digital platform built for parents and carers of SEN children. Through in-person exchange with our speakers and participants, we hope to pool ideas and co-create community support initiatives for SEN youth in the year ahead.

This event will be conducted in Cantonese and will include small-group discussion.

The former President of the Dragon Boat Club at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a former member of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Team, Mr. Matthew Lai represented both his university team and the Hong Kong team in dragon boat competitions around the world, winning numerous awards. After graduation, he joined Hywind Watersport founded by Mr. Victor Lau, with the mission of promoting the sport of dragon boating to the public. During the pandemic, they pioneered parent-child dragon boat classes, which were very well received. To date, these programmes have served more than 60,000 participant-visits.

Matthew is also actively involved in community service. In 2023, Hywind Watersport received funding from the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund to launch the “Dragon Windbreaker” programme. The initiative provided dragon boat experiences to more than 120 marginalised young people and trained 36 of them to become parent-child dragon boat coaches. These newly trained coaches then joined the parent-child dragon boat classes, creating meaningful social value through sport.
