Strolling through the snow-covered imperial garden, Emperor Qianlong is inspired to compose a poem on the plum blossoms. Liu Yong offers a line to round off the Emperor's verse, a small courtesy that soon lands him in trouble. Heshen seizes the chance to make mischief, and a single poem becomes tangled up in imperial pride and old rivalries. As Heshen piles on the pressure, how will Liu Yong respond?

A highlight of the Beijing opera series The Prime Minister Liu Luoguo (《宰相刘罗锅》), An Ode to the Plum Blossom is a battle of wits between an emperor and his ministers, mixing humour and satire with genuine feeling. Arias and spoken dialogue interweave as each character's motives surface in sharp exchanges. With a light, comic touch, the opera portrays the ways of the world and the contest between right and wrong, power and integrity. Join us at the theatre for an evening of laughter and the music of Beijing opera.
