সেদিন ছিল বৃহস্পতি বারটা,
ছিল হিন্দুদের ঘরে লক্ষীপুজার দিনটা ।
সে ছিল আমার মামাতো বোন ,
ছিল শিলা তার নামটা ।
মরণ ব্যাধি ক্যান্সারে ,
নিয়ে গেল না ফেরার দেশে তার।
রেখে গেলো সোহাগী স্বামী আর,
এক মেয়ে ও নাতি পুতি তার।
কপালে সিঁথির সিঁদুর চন্দন পরে,
পায়ে লাল আলতা মেখে,
সবাই কে চোখের জলে রেখে ,
সোহাগী স্বামীর কাঁধে চরে,
চলে গেলো শ্মশান ঘাটের ঘরে।
শেষ স্নান শেষে সাঁজিয়ে দিল চিতায়,
করে দিল জ্বালিয়ে ছারখার ,
সোনার সবদেহ খানি তার।
কোথায় থাকলো স্বামী আর ,
কোথায় থাকলো কন্যা জামাই।
পরে থাকলো পাড়া প্রতিবেশী সবাই,
নিবে না কেহ খোঁজ আর তার।
সব স্বপ্ন, সব গল্প ,সব সুখ,
সব হাসি মলিন করে ,
দিয়ে গেলো সারা জীবনের দুঃখ।
হে ঈশ্বর বোনটার,
বিদেহী আত্মা রেখো,
সুখে শান্তিতে তার।
এই র্নিমম মৃত্যু যেন ,
কাহারও জীবনে না আসে আর।
হে দয়াময় ভগবান কাহারও জীবনে,
দিও না এই অকাল মৃত্যু।

It was a Thursday,
The day of Lakshmi Puja in Hindu households.
She was my cousin—
Shila was her name.
A fatal cancer
Took her away to the land of no return.
She left behind a loving husband,
And a daughter, along with her grandchildren.
With vermilion and sandalwood paste adorning her forehead,
And red *alta* dye upon her feet,
Leaving everyone behind in tears,
Borne upon the shoulders of her loving husband,
She departed for the cremation ground.
After the final ablution, she was laid upon the pyre;
Flames reduced to ashes
That precious, golden body of hers.
Where, then, remained the husband,
Or the daughter and son-in-law?
Left behind were the neighbors and the community,
Yet none would ever seek her out again.
It dimmed every dream, every story, every joy, and every smile,
Leaving behind a lifetime of sorrow.
Oh God, keep my sister's
Departed soul
In peace and happiness.
May such a cruel death
Never visit anyone's life again.
Oh Merciful God, do not let
Such a premature death befall anyone
