The Painter, the Poet, and the Actress live with the illusion that art can save them and isolate them from the major social movements of the era. Each has withdrawn into their own world, governed by their own rules. The death of the Poet by an assassin`s bullet is the logical consequence of his nihilistic rebellion against cruelty. This prompts the Painter to step out of the quiet of his studio. Running parallel to the drama of the three loners is the tragic destruction of a Bulgarian village following the suppression of the September Uprising of 1923.
