We invite you to another edition of Åpen Dialog at Melahuset on Saturday, October 24.
How does violence reshape political imagination?
How does prolonged political violence shape what a society believes is possible? What happens to collective memory, resistance, and the ability to imagine a different future when violence becomes part of everyday life?
For this edition, we have invited anthropologist and researcher Dr. Pardis Shafafi to explore these questions in relation to Iran, its history of state violence, and the political and social realities of the present.
Following the lecture, there will be questions from the moderator and audience, before we take a short break and open the room for dialogue.
About Pardis Shafafi
Dr. Pardis Shafafi is an applied anthropologist and associate researcher at the Laboratoire d’Anthropologie Politique (LAP/EHESS) in Paris. Her research examines Iranian state violence, trauma politics, systemic impunity, historical memory, and grassroots justice initiatives within the Iranian diaspora.
She regularly contributes analysis to international media, including the BBC, Al Jazeera, Radio France Internationale, Aftenposten and NRK.
She is co-editor of the forthcoming book The Long Iranian Revolution: Counter-Memories, Violence and the Afterlives of 1979 (Bloomsbury, 2027), which revisits the Iranian Revolution through suppressed histories, unresolved conflicts and interrupted political possibilities.
Shafafi also serves on the board of ARTICLE 19, is co-founder of the Do No Harm Framework for designers, and is Executive Editor of Anthropology in Action.
Live performance: Kiana & Ipek
This evening also features a live audiovisual performance by Kiana & Ipek.
Kiana is a folk singer whose voice moves through themes of nature, the body, the soul and love. Drawing on traditional vocal techniques, she explores emotion, presence and nostalgic memory through song.
Ipek is a visual artist who creates live drawings in dialogue with sound and movement. Through improvised digital painting, she explores the relationship between what we hear, see and feel.
Together, they bring voice and live visuals into an improvised performance where sound and image respond to one another in real time.
