The YGO launches its new season with a blast - literally! Arnold's trumpet concerto, composed in 1981, is an ebullient work and was given its debut performance by the late John Wallace. Arnold was a professional trumpet player himself and this piece is a wonderful three movement work that shows off the Instrument's abilities to the full.
The main feature of the concert in the second half will be the superb first symphony of Sir William Walton. This is a challenging work to perform, but it is very rewarding and is typical of Walton in semi serious mood. The orchestra first performed this work a few years ago and the players are relishing the prospect of playing it again.
Manuel de Falla's Three Cornered Hat is a ballet written in 1919 adapted from an earlier pantomime at the request of Diaghilev. It features Spanish folk and dance music - which De Falla then adapted into a couple of orchestra suites, the second of which will feature in this concert.
The first half opens with another fanfare - in the form of Walton's Crown Imperial; a grand statement of British pomp and circumstance!
