Join experienced embroiderer Ros McCarthy for a relaxed hands-on workshop using reclaimed textiles, embroidery and embellishment inspired by the current sculptural exhibition Jo Torr: Self Portrait – The Shape of a Lineage.
This small-group creative experience will guide you to create a unique textile tribute to honour a beloved family member, a cherished friend, or an inspiring historical figure.
Using beautiful reclaimed white and cream household linens, you will create your own embroidered textile piece to take home and treasure.
Using beautiful reclaimed white or cream household linens, you will create your own embroidered textile piece, combining personal details and decorative stitching, ribbons, beads and other decorative accents.
Ros will guide you through the process, sharing practical embroidery techniques, ideas and inspiration along the way.
Whether you are returning to embroidery after many years or have never picked up a needle before, you will be encouraged to develop your own design and work at your own pace. integrate names or initials, significant dates, memorable places, and symbolic floral motifs using a variety of embellishment techniques. You can create a small hanging sachet or a piece that can be framed.
Materials included however bring any small textile keepsake or haberdashery item with personal meaning to use in your work. It might be a vintage button from a grandmother's sewing box, a piece of lace from a much-loved garment, or a small fragment of fabric that has a story behind it.
You will Learn & Create: How to arrange your narrative elements beautifully on vintage fabric
Embellishment Techniques:
Hand-embroidery stitches, beadwork, and ribbon manipulation to add texture and depth
Embroidered Personalization:
Methods for transferring and stitching text (names, initials, dates, and locations) and floral designs.
Time: 1.00pm - 5.00pm
Included: Materials - reclaimed antique and household linens, embroidery threads, ribbons, beads, needles, hoops, needles, hoops, scissors and marking tools.

About Ros McCarthy
Ros McCarthy has been part of the embroidery community for more than 40 years and is a member of the Canterbury Embroiderers' Guild. With decades of experience in embroidery and textile techniques, Ros is passionate about sharing her knowledge and helping others discover the pleasure of making with needle and thread. Her teaching style is relaxed and encouraging, making this workshop suitable for all levels of experience.
