Initially popular, opposition to Australia’s involvement in the First World War grew as prices at home skyrocketed, wages stagnated and thousands died on the front. By 1916 strikes were growing as workers grew tired of the sacrifices. A lack of volunteers to fight led Labor Prime Minister Billy Hughes to call two referendums to try to win support for conscription. This meeting will tell the story of how union opposition saw him defeated and the Prime Minister expelled from the Labor Party despite ruthless repression of the anti-war and anti-conscription campaign.
