Work In Progress aims to bring together Angus' original music, while also honouring the jazz tradition. This performance is comprised of two original works, and also features the music of Thelonious Monk, David Kikoski, Eliott Smith, and Oz Noy in various arrangements and versions. He will be bringing this music to life with the help of friends he has made during his time at WAAPA. Jazz music is built on being played with and for people, and this recital showcases Angus' journey through music he has made and is inspired by, played with friends.
"The concept is simple; playing with others as a means of exploring how his playing changes with different lineups. Angus' honours theses is an exploration of melody on the drumset, and this recital includes playing various types of melody on drums, e.g. solo drums, accompanied soloing, and trading. The title "Work In Progress" is based in the approach of the recital, by using a different lineup of musicians for each song, exploring how the drums can be used to create different sounds, textures and moods. Jazz is all about playing with others, and preserving the music of the greats while also continuing to push into new territory. In this recital, playing each piece with a new lineup invites for new sonic avenues to be explored, and the drumset to be given focus. A trip to New York in 2025 inspired the idea of melody on the drums, as each drummer there had an intense relationship with the songs melody and their playing boldly showed it. "Work In Progress" sums up Angus' musical journey so far; the work is never done, but he is striving towards progress."
