Hannah Starkey is one of the foremost artists and photographers working in the UK today. Her large-scale photographs engage with how women are represented in contemporary culture. Her portraits capture moments of everyday life and an expanded female experience. Starkey reveals women in moments of private reflection or social interaction that might otherwise go unseen the large scale of her images offering monumentality to these instances. Her work was recently a major solo exhibition at the Hepworth Wakefield, and on display in two group Hayward Gallery Touring exhibitions, Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood and After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989 – 2024, as well as the South London Gallery exhibition Acts of Resistance: Photography, Feminisms and the Art of Protest organised in collaboration with the V&A, London.
Maureen Paley is one of the most respected and long-running commercial galleries in the UK, and was one of the first galleries to present contemporary art in London’s East End and has been a pioneer of the current scene representing a diverse range of international artists. She has worked with Hannah since she graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1997 and gave Hannah her first solo show in 1998. They have had 8 solo shows since, with Maureen working closely with Hannah, supporting and representing her in the art world for nearly three decades.
