An evening of traditional folk magic crafts by candlelight at the museum. Make three protective pieces to take home, each with its own story from British folklore.For centuries, ordinary people across the North protected their homes with simple handmade charms. Join us at the museum for a relaxed, hands-on evening exploring these old traditions and making your own pieces to take home.
Over two hours you will make:
Rowan and Red Thread Charm
Across Northumberland, the Borders and Scotland, crosses of rowan bound with red thread were hung over doorways and carried in pockets to keep ill luck away. You will make your own using locally gathered rowan.
Rolled Beeswax Candle
Hand-roll a natural beeswax candle and press in dried herbs and flowers of your choice.
Spell Jar
Traditionally, protective bottles were hidden near the hearth or doorway. You will fill and seal your own small bottle with salt, herbs and a written intention for the winter ahead.
Each piece comes with a take-home card explaining its history and folklore. Light refreshments are served during the evening.
No experience is needed, and everyone is welcome, whatever your beliefs. The evening is about history, tradition and making something by hand.

Spaces are limited to keep the evening small and relaxed, so early booking is recommended.
Suitable for ages 16+ .
Please arrive a few minutes before 7pm so we can start on time.
Candles are taken home unlit. LED lighting is used in the craft area for safety.
