Witches & The Epic Feminine:
Sorcery, Shapeshifting and Female Power in Our Islands’ Oldest Story
Brigid Lowe enters the strange, beautiful and violent magic of the Mabinogi: the ancient Welsh myth cycle she grew up surrounded by on Ynys Môn, the stronghold of Druidic religion, and has reimagined in The Bloody Branch.
At its heart is Arianrhod, an elusive moon-sorceress whose spells shape identity and destiny. Around her are two very different shapeshifters: Blodeuwedd, conjured from flowers to serve a man and transformed into an owl, and Goewin, the slave and rape survivor who remakes herself as a queen. All three resist the roles imposed upon them.
Through readings and discussion, Brigid explores the connections between witchcraft, women’s bodies and the natural world: magic as knowledge, vengeance, survival and healing—and the power of women who refuse to remain in the shapes chosen for them.
