Join us for a relaxed nature walk in a friendly group at Cabin Wood, Cookstown, to get outside and enjoy the wildlife we find.
About this Event

Discover the abundant wildlife that calls Cabin Wood its home. There is lots to be enjoyed in this wee woodland at the south end of Cookstown! We'll enjoy the woodland's nature each month and see how it changes with the seasons, by tuning into birdsong, looking out for insects, and soaking up the calm of nature together. You don’t need any prior nature knowledge to come along - just bring your curiosity, and enjoy the outdoors with us!

Dates and time: On the first Sunday of each month from 2-4pm.

Meeting point: The group will meet in the Cabin Wood car park, which is at the end of a slightly bumpy track. The entrance to Cabin Wood isn’t signposted so here are the directions:

  • Coming from Cookstown, take the first exit for Tullywiggan Road on the Loughry Roundabout (where the A29 meets Sandholes Road and Tullywiggan Road at the south end of Cookstown).
  • Then take the first left turn before the Grange Road, up the (slightly bumpy!) entrance road, which is opposite DBS Cookstown Building Supplies store.
  • Here is a map to make sense of this!

Walking distance: We'll walk slowly for about 1 mile in total around the woodland, stopping often to enjoy the wildlife.

Toilets: There aren’t toilets on site, the nearest toilets are 1 mile away at Asda.

What to bring: Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather (bring waterproofs just in case!) and wear sturdy footwear - the paths are relatively flat but they’re not paved/tarmacked. We’ll be bringing binoculars along for folks to borrow, but bring phones to photograph the wildlife and any other equipment if you have it.

Accessibility: Unfortunately this site isn't suitable for wheelchair users. If you have any questions about accessibility, or any other queries, please email Sorrel at [email protected].

Volunteer-led events: As these are volunteer-led events, there are a couple of things to draw your attention to: we have a no dogs policy (except for assistance dogs) just so everyone is comfortable and under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. There is more information about these points and others in this document.

These events are coordinated by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Northern Ireland in partnership with the Woodland Trust NI, Cookstown Wildlife Trust, and Mid Ulster District Council. BTO NI is a charity that seeks to understand and protect our wild bird populations and connect people with nature. Find out more about what we do at www.bto.org/about/where/northern-ireland.
