Christmas hasn't always been cosy. People have resisted it, reshaped it and tried to regulate it. Historian Caroline Nyvang tells that story over a drink in a cosy Copenhagen bar. The talk is in English, with Q&A. Come on your own or bring a friend.About the talk Caroline Nyvang explores the surprising history of Danish Christmas traditions, including the people and movements that resisted, reshaped, or tried to regulate them. Rather than treating Christmas as timeless, she shows how customs become traditions through social negotiation and disagreement.
Expect an accessible evening about celebration, conflict and everyday life, followed by questions and conversation about how competing social norms and ideals still shape the way we gather today.
About the speaker Caroline Nyvang is a historian at the Royal Danish Library. She’ll bring historical pictures that show how Christmas in Denmark has looked and changed over time.
How the evening works Doors open at 18:00. Grab a drink at the bar and find a seat. The talk starts at 18:30 and lasts about 45 minutes, followed by Q&A. You’re welcome to stay for drinks and conversation afterwards.
You don’t need to know anything about history to enjoy it. The talk is for anyone who’s curious, and since it’s in English, it’s a good evening for internationals and Danes alike.
