We’re delighted to welcome renowned sailor, author and broadcaster **Tom Cunliffe** to Whitby Yacht Club as part of the **Whitby Literary Festival**, for a special afternoon exploring his new book, *Hurricane Force*.
# About Tom Cunliffe #
Tom Cunliffe has spent a lifetime at sea. He has skippered yachts, raced offshore, worked on sailing and merchant vessels, taught sailing and navigation, and travelled extensively around the world. He is also the author of 26 published books, including navigation, seamanship, history and travel titles, and is known for his entertaining talks and broadcasting.
He has presented and appeared in a number of television programmes, including BBC’s *Island Race* and *Boats that Built Britain*, and has built a large following of sailors and maritime enthusiasts through his writing, broadcasting and online presence.

*Hurricane Force* is Tom’s move into fiction – a gripping story of adventure, danger, environmental conflict and survival.
The story follows Ian Hordle, a Merchant Navy deck officer who sets off across the Atlantic in a converted fishing boat, looking for a new life. When a rogue container holes his boat, he is forced into a desperate battle to keep himself and his vessel afloat.
Reaching a small Caribbean island, Ian expects to find a repair yard. Instead, he discovers a community under threat from development and greed, with an environmental struggle unfolding around him. Drawn into the resistance, Ian finds himself facing increasingly dangerous forces – while an approaching hurricane threatens to change everything.
