WHEEL OF CONSENT & CONTACT IMPROVISATION Intensive
How do we become more aware of what we want, what we don’t want, and what we are actually choosing in a dance?
This four-day intensive brings together the Wheel of Consent and Contact Improvisation, creating space to investigate desire, choice, boundaries, receiving, giving, and embodied communication through both structured practices and dancing.
The Wheel of Consent was developed by Dr. Betty Martin. It provides a framework for understanding the difference between who is doing an action and who the action is for. These deceptively simple questions can open up a rich exploration of agency, desire, boundaries, and choice.
In the morning sessions, through experiential exercises, we will practice listening to the body and noticing the information it gives us. We’ll explore how we recognize a genuine Yes, a No, a Maybe, and the places where our choices become less clear. We’ll also look at how we can communicate our desires and limits and create agreements that allow for greater clarity and choice. Most of the exercises will be movement-based.
No previous experience with the Wheel of Consent is required.
In the afternoon sessions, we’ll bring these explorations into Contact Improvisation.
Contact Improvisation is a partnered movement practice based on touch, momentum, weight-sharing, gravity, balance, and improvisation. Rather than following predetermined choreography or fixed leader/follower roles, dancers respond to an ever-changing physical and relational landscape.
The Wheel of Consent gives us another lens through which to experience this complexity. We’ll investigate how questions of desire, agency, and reciprocity show up in Contact Improvisation, and how becoming more conscious of these dynamics can influence the way we dance and inspire creativity and play.
Rather than treating consent as simply a set of rules about what is and isn’t allowed, we’ll explore it as an embodied practice of noticing, choosing, communicating, and responding.
Throughout the intensive, in both morning and afternoon sessions, we’ll return to questions such as:
What do I want?
What am I available for?
What am I choosing?
Who is this action for?
How do I know when my answer changes?
The intention is not to eliminate the ambiguity and complexity that make improvisational dance so rich, but to develop more tools for navigating that complexity with awareness and choice.
This Intensive May Be a Good Fit If You…
* have some experience participating in dance classes, workshops, jams, or other movement spaces
* are curious about bringing greater awareness to consent and choice
* want to develop your ability to recognize and communicate your desires and limits
* are interested in exploring the Wheel of Consent through embodied practice
* want to deepen your understanding of how consent, communication, and agency intersect with Contact Improvisation
* are comfortable learning and exploring within a group setting
All levels of movement experience are welcome; you do not need to be an experienced Contact Improvisation dancer.
This Intensive May Not Be the Right Fit If…
you are currently navigating a recent or ongoing experience of consent violation and feel that participating in an experiential, touch-based group workshop may be destabilizing for you at this time.
