One of the most difficult parts of caring for someone experiencing cognitive decline is not knowing what comes next. Is this behavior part of their disease? What stage are they in? What changes should we be preparing for? And how do we know when they need more support?
What Stage Is My Loved One In, & What Comes Next? is an educational class designed to help families and caregivers better understand the progression of cognitive impairment and dementia—from early changes through more advanced stages of disease.
Attendees will learn how changes in memory, communication, behavior, judgment, mobility, personal care, eating, safety, and independence may evolve over time. The class will also discuss what families may encounter as the disease progresses, questions to ask healthcare providers, when additional support may be needed, and how to plan proactively rather than waiting for a crisis.
The goal is not simply to identify a stage. It is to help caregivers better understand where their loved one may be today, what changes to watch for, and how to prepare for what could come next while continuing to protect dignity, safety, and quality of life.
Presented by Catherine McDermott, PMHNP
Catherine is the Co-Owner of Town Square University Parkway, Gulfside Behavioral Care, and Coastal Senior Healthcare. She is a double board-certified Nurse Practitioner with 30 years of experience, specializing in geriatric patients and individuals living with cognitive impairments.
This educational class is free and open to the public as part of the Town Square University Parkway Health Expo & Resource Fair.
Seating is first come, first served. Guests are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early to help secure a seat.
