We spend enormous amounts of time, money, and effort pursuing happiness—but how much control do we really have over it? Drawing on decades of research in positive psychology, this talk examines what science reveals about the roles of circumstance, personality, relationships, and everyday behavior in building a happier life. You'll leave with evidence-based insights into which paths to well-being actually work—and practical ways to bring a little more happiness into your own days.
🎤 Speaker: Katherine Nelson-Coffey, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of Positive Psychology programs in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Arizona State University. Her research examines how intentional behaviors—such as expressing gratitude or being kind to others—shape individual, relationship, and family well-being. Dr. Nelson-Coffey's research on these topics has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, published in leading academic journals, and featured in numerous media outlets, including National Geographic, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post.
The night is designed as a three-part talk experience, with guided table discussions between each chapter, so you can engage with the ideas and connect with the people around you.

Formation Brewing is a 10,000-square-foot brewpub on Roosevelt Row in the heart of downtown Phoenix, built around a sunken central seating area and a 19-tank brewhouse in full view of guests. Head brewer Sam Townsend, a two-time Great American Beer Festival gold medalist, crafts Arizona-inspired beers rooted in Southwest flavors, paired with a kitchen known for shareables and Detroit-style pizzas.
