In 1785, at age fifty, Hallowell midwife Martha Ballard began a diary of her life along the Kennebec. She kept it for nearly three decades, and it went on to reshape how historians understand the lives of ordinary early American women.Join the Androscoggin Historical Society and the Auburn Public Library as Maine State Library Reference Librarian and textile historian Kelli Burnham brings that diary to life. Kelli's presentation pairs entries from the diary with her research into the clothing the Ballard family made and wore. She'll bring reproduction garments sewn with historical techniques, and you're welcome to handle and examine them up close.
We will also display original clothing from its own collection dating to the period when Martha and her family lived in Maine.
