About this Event
What Has Space Ever Done for Us?
A surprisingly entertaining look at why life on Earth depends on space.
We rarely give much thought to what's happening hundreds of miles above our heads. But from the phones in our pockets to the systems that keep our economy, transport networks and everyday lives running, we're remarkably dependent on space.
So what happens when things go wrong?
For our final Tech Connect of the year, we're welcoming Nick Howes, Space Systems Technical Lead at BMT, for a fascinating and occasionally amusing look at our relationship with space, and just how much we take for granted.
Nick will explore the extraordinary technologies we depend on, the growing challenges of operating in an increasingly crowded and contested space environment, and the very real consequences if the systems we rely on suddenly stopped working.
It's a serious subject, but in Nick's hands, it's also a story full of surprising facts, extraordinary science and plenty of humour.
With more than 400 lectures delivered across four continents, Nick knows how to make complex technical subjects accessible, engaging and memorable.
Join us for a slightly different end-of-year Tech Connect. We'll have the festive refreshments ready, and Nick will provide plenty of food for thought.
About our speaker
Nick Howes (MA Dist, MIET, FRAS) is Space Systems Technical Lead at BMT, a multinational engineering and technology company known for its role in designing the Royal Navy's two aircraft carriers.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and currently provides technical leadership across major UK defence and civil space programmes.
His expertise spans everything from satellite collision avoidance and orbital dynamics to space security, cyber threats and the technologies protecting the systems we increasingly rely upon.
A familiar face to audiences including Bath Digital Festival, Nick brings a rare combination of technical expertise, humour and a genuine passion for making science accessible.
About this event
A little different for December, we are starting earlier and connecting with the WorkShed members festive get together.

TechConnect
Do you work in, or are interested in, the creative, digital or tech space?
If yes, this is the perfect place to meet other like-minded individuals in the Swindon & Wiltshire area.
You could be working in tech, running your own business, or interested in tech, maybe thinking about starting a business.
You might just want to hear what people are working on and up for meeting some great people over a drink and a slice or two of pizza
These events are not networking, they are casual, friendly and inclusive – come along to share ideas, not business cards.
We aim to keep these evenings, fun, light and a great place to get together. See you there!
Please note, that by signing up for tickets to this event, you are giving permission to be added to the Workshed monthly mailing list.
