In 2022, Ian Herbert-Jones took on one of the fiercest challenges in sailing - The Golden Globe. He was dismasted after rounding Cape Horn, but lived to tell some incredible tales....
It was to be just another day having rounded Cape Horn but, 218 days in, Puffin is rolled and dismasted in 70-90knot winds! Alone and injured in a crippled boat 100 miles NE of the Falklands, Ian was eventually rescued…
The GGR is not to be taken lightly. It’s a sprint around the world using only the same navigation aids as was used in the 1968 race when GPS wasn’t an option.
It all started in 1968 when Robin Knox-Johnston took 312 days to sail around the world and win as the only finisher from nine starters.
Puffin
“When I first heard of the new edition of the GGR back in 2015 I was immediately drawn to this amazing adventure…”
Ian started sailing over 30 years ago while serving with the British Army as an avionics engineer. In 2007-08 he completed a full circumnavigation as watch leader in the Clipper around the world race. Ian will take us through the race’s history and his own story of sailing in the roughest conditions until disaster struck then and his subsequent rescue.
