What if reading a book didn’t end with words on a page?What if you could enter its world through voice, sound, touch, smell, ritual and art?
🌀 WELCOME TO THE SANATORIUM - Reading, Sound and Senses Workshop invites you into the strange, sensual and slightly unsettling world of Olga Tokarczuk’s The Empusium. 🌀
→ Together with Polsk på norsk, Norwegian translator of The Empusium Julia Aagenæs Wiedlocha, and singer, music scholar and art therapist Agata Żelechowska, we’ll spend an afternoon experiencing literature with more than just our eyes.
📘 Set in a Silesian health resort in 1913, The Empusium - often described as Tokarczuk’s feminist response to, or tender pastiche of, Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain — moves between illness and healing, nature and instinct, rationality and the supernatural.
Reading → listening → singing → breathing → creating → reflecting. ∞
Our own sanatorium will unfold in three parts:
You can join one, two or all three parts. No preparation, singing experience or artistic experience is required. You can participate actively, or simply listen.
Curiosity is enough.

🌀 PART I · 12:00–13:30
→ 📖 Shared Reading: The Empusium
Norwegian translator Julia Aagenæs Wiedlocha will guide us through a reading circle using the Shared Reading approach.
You’ll receive the text when you arrive, so no preparation is necessary. And if you’d rather simply listen, that’s completely fine too.

🌀 PART II · 13:30–15:15
→ Song Between the Natural and the Supernatural - A Music Experience and Song Circle
With Agata Żelechowska, we’ll listen to old Polish folk songs telling stories that move between the natural and supernatural worlds.
Part performance, part ritual, the experience will then open into a song circle, where you’ll have the opportunity to learn some of the songs and explore the healing potential of singing.
No singing experience is required -and you are equally welcome to remain silent and listen.

🌀 PART III · 15:15-16:30
→ 🌿 My Inner Health Resort
What does it mean to breathe fully? What does it take to heal?
Inspired by The Empusium, we’ll use art therapy exercises to explore healing, nature, breath, instinct and magic, creating our own artworks and making space for reflection and sharing.
No previous art experience is required. All materials will be provided.
You can take your artwork home or choose to present it during the Grand Finale of We Do Festival on October 25 at Høymagasinet.
