Your refrigerator has requested a meeting. It’s concerned about the lack of fresh carrots. The bread situation is becoming urgent. And it would like to know why there are still no Jordanian chocolate-covered dates in the house.
Fortunately, the Saturday Market on the Green in Historic New Castle can resolve all of this. Outdoors. With music.
Beneath our magnificent shade trees, friendly vendors will help you turn “I’m just going to have a look” into a perfectly respectable lunch, several future dinners, and a pastry that won’t survive the walk to the car.
On the agenda:
🍅 Farm-fresh produce and herbs and stuff from the ground
🌻 Flowers, because the kitchen table deserves a social life
🥖 Artisan breads and baked treats—follow the crumbs
🧀 Gourmet specialties for guests, or for before guests arrive
🌱 Vegan favorites and microgreens, terrifyingly health
🍗 Soul food worth arranging your life around
🎨 Handcrafted gifts, soaps, and woodwork and more... get ahead of gifting, then accidentally keep them
Shopping on the Green has been going on for more than 300 years. Generations of New Castle residents have come here for provisions and stayed to hear something interesting about somebody. We are proud to maintain both services.
There’s live music, children’s activities, and plenty of room to catch up with friends. Dogs are welcome, although they may have strong opinions about which food vendor to visit first.
Free rubber duckies are also available, thanks to Andrew Zeltt. You may arrive as a sensible adult with a shopping list. You may leave holding a duck. These things happen.
Bring the children, the neighbors, your bicycle, or that visiting relative you’ve been entertaining with increasingly detailed explanations of your house renovations.
And make a day of it. Historic New Castle is best explored at the speed of someone who has nowhere urgent to be. Browse the shops. Visit a museum. Wander the brick sidewalks past old houses and gardens. Stop for coffee, stay for lunch, and allow a short walk to become a very pleasant afternoon.
The errands will still be there later. The pastry may not.
See you Saturday on the Green. Your refrigerator will thank you.
