About this Event
We meet next at the Greenwich Foot Tunnel entrance, right next to the Cutty Sark tea clipper. We hear about how the British taste for tea provoked war, opium addiction, and drove the expansion of empire in India....as well as the liberation tea houses brought to women's social lives.
We move on to the Old Royal Naval College - and hear about the lives of the Tudor monarchs who changed history from their palace of Placentia.
And of course we hear about the lives of sailors, heroes and pirates who changed the face of Greenwich and global history.
We will then make our way into Greenwich Park to enjoy the views that were shared for hundreds of years by Charles II, Turner and the old veterans of the British Navy.
There are some steep walks, but the effort is well worth it to get the views across the whole of London. We will do this at a leisurely pace to ensure everyone can enjoy the stroll.
We explore the top of the park, pausing to hear about the former slaves who lived around Greenwich and who prospered as freed men in C18 London, before making our way to the Royal Observatory and the Prime Meridian - hearing the exciting stories of navigation and science that helped Britain rule the waves for hundreds of years.
The tour ends at the Observatory
If you want to make a day of it, there is so much to see before or after the tour - the Market in the town centre is full of arts and crafts as well as delicious food stalls.
There is also the option of exploring some of the museums of Greenwich - the National Maritime Museum and Queen's House are well worth visiting and are free. The Observatory, Cutty Sark and the Painted Hall make charges for entry.
Outside the Foot Tunnel entrance - in the picture above - is where we meet.
You can arrive in Greenwich via DLR (Docklands Light Railway) - Cutty Sark is the nearest stop and a couple of minutes from the Foot Tunnel - just walk to towards the river when you come out.
A fun way to arrive is via Uber Boat Thames Clipper. The pier is right next to our meeting point.
You can also get the mainline train to Greenwich. It is less than 10 minutes walk to our riverside meeting point.
