Join us for a screening of Voices of Resistance, a short documentary sharing personal stories of exile following Myanmar's 2021 military coup. Light refreshments will be served at the event.
The screening will be followed by a panel conversation exploring experiences of displacement and exile, as well as broader questions around Myanmar, resistance, belonging and the challenges faced by people forced to leave their home country. There will also be an opportunity for audience questions and discussion.
About the film
Voices of Resistance examines the aftermath of the 2021 Myanmar military coup through the personal narratives of three refugees from Myanmar, two of whom participated anonymously. Their accounts are contextualised by expert contributors Dr Sean Turnell, Australian economist and former Economic Advisor to Myanmar, and Dr Susan Banki, Associate Professor at the University of Sydney.
At the heart of the documentary are the experiences of exile: leaving behind loved ones, home and familiar communities, and navigating the emotional challenges that follow forced displacement. Production began in March 2024 and was completed in early 2025. The project was initiated by a group of university and community friends and developed with the generous support of a professional freelance documentary filmmaker.
