Riffs, runs, ad libs, dynamics, vocal textures, and all the little choices that make a song sound like you—that’s vocal styling. In this interactive masterclass, we’ll explore the tools singers use to move beyond simply singing the notes and start making creative, expressive choices with their voices. You’ll learn how to add riffs and runs, play with dynamics, shape phrases, use ad libs, and experiment with different stylistic choices without losing the heart of the song.
We’ll break down what makes vocal styling work, how to hear and identify stylistic choices in the music you love, and how to take those ideas and make them your own. You’ll work on accuracy, agility, timing, control, and musicality—but just as importantly, you’ll explore when to use these tools and how to make them feel intentional rather than tacked on. Through guided exercises and real musical examples, you’ll experiment with different approaches and discover what works for your voice, your song, and your artistic personality.
You’ll leave with practical tools for adding more color, personality, and expression to your singing—and a better sense of how to make a song your own.
This workshop is interactive. Come ready to perform a song, whether it’s to a track or self-accompanied! (We may not have time to work with all participants.)
