About this Event
Bring a well-worn item to fix, and Lucy will provide the materials and expertise to walk you through a creative and durable repair over the course of this morning’s workshop. You will get an overview of patchwork stitching basics (including the running stitch, whip stitch, sashiko, darning, and blanket stitch) and gain the direction to plan and complete a durable, beautiful mend. Physical examples of mended garments for inspiration and materials will be provided.
Required skills/prerequisites:
No experience necessary! Complete beginners can expect to complete a sewing sampler and start to mend their own items. Confident beginners and intermediate stitchers can expect to complete the sampler and one or more mends of their own. The goal is for everyone to walk away with the skills and confidence to continue mending their own clothes afterwards, even if they don't get to them during the class.
Lucy Wanchun Leith is an artist, designer, and teacher for all things mending and low-waste design in Chicago, IL. She designs and provides mending services, workshops, and instructional zines under the name LucyDreamsOf. When she's not drafting garments and darning beloved, worn-out clothes, Lucy is drawing, making comics & zines, and leading meetups with Climbers of Color every 3rd Thursday night at First Ascent Uptown.
